If you see a gray paper nest, you don’t have honey bees

You have paper wasps

These gray paper nest are made by various aptly named species of paper wasps. The wasps gather wood and plant pulp from the environment, chew it up and work it along with saliva into a paper like product. You wouldn’t think that paper would hold up very well in the outdoors but these nests can survive a surprising amount of abuse from the elements. Paper wasps prefer to build their nests in sheltered nooks but they do not typically build in the super sheltered refuges that honey bees require.

Bald Faced Hornet Nest

The easiest way to distinguish a bald faced hornet’s nest from a yellow jacket nest is the chaotic way that the layers of paper are constructed. Where a yellow jacket nest is usually an orderly round ball, bald faced hornet nests often look like they were made with the same sort of angry chaos that these wasps exhibit when defending their territory.
